12.10.2021 Improving the mobile network together
We at Sinnwell AG are now part of the O-RAN Alliance, which has set itself the goal of establishing an open standard for radio access networks.
Faster connections and better networks – together with internationally leading mobile communications companies, we are working to achieve these goals. To implement the new 5G standard, expanding infrastructure in Germany and Europe is unavoidable. The O-RAN Alliance brings together hardware and software companies that pursue these shared objectives.
Together, we aim to further develop radio access networks (RAN) so that they become more intelligent, open, and therefore more flexible. This will effectively improve and accelerate the expansion of mobile networks.
Problems with existing radio access networks (RAN)
A RAN essentially requires three things: a base station, a mobile radio tower with an antenna, and software for data exchange. In the past, problems arose due to the lack of vendor diversity and compatibility between systems. Since all technical components of the radio access network had to come from a single manufacturer, unwanted vendor lock-ins increasingly developed. These have made the expansion and further development of radio access networks and the underlying technology more expensive and slower.
How the O-RAN Alliance accelerates processes
The O-RAN Alliance has set itself the goal of improving the expansion of radio access networks through an open standard. Hardware and software are separated, enabling collaboration between multiple manufacturers and partners. One manufacturer provides the base station, another the radio unit, and a third the software solution. This allows carriers to respond quickly and precisely to changes in demand, making the expansion of radio access networks significantly more flexible and scalable. System upgrades – for example to 6G – are also simplified through software. With an Open RAN approach, we reduce both capital and operational expenditures of mobile networks through flexible “best-of-breed” solutions.
The role of Sinnwell AG in the O-RAN Alliance
With its mobile communications specialists within the audius Group, Sinnwell AG positions itself as highly flexible and demand-oriented within the O-RAN Alliance. Through our expertise, we support system integrators and manufacturers and will drive the expansion of radio access networks together with O-RAN Alliance partners in the coming years.
Support from the German Federal Government
The introduction of 5G requires a profound transformation of infrastructure in Europe. To support this, the German Federal Government has approved funding of two billion euros for Open RAN activities. By separating hardware and software, the Open RAN approach enables a modular structure that can be used universally. With this solution, the government aims to make the mobile communications sector accessible to manufacturers from the traditional IT sector while reducing dependence on individual vendors. Another effect is significant cost savings as well as the urgently needed acceleration of the expansion process. Additionally, this is expected to increase the stability and availability of mobile networks, which will be an absolute prerequisite for infrastructure and mobile communication as a whole in the medium to long term.
